You must be careful when trying to apply a VFD or Softstart to a wound rotor motor. You can do it, if you short the armature rings but since the motor was designed for voltage and current to be applied to the armature through slip rings and not induction the available starting torque is greatly reduced. You can continue to use the existing resistors at start up to add needed torque but at running speed the slips rings need to be shorted.
