Hello Nico

Soft starters are not able to reverse motors, they operate in exactly the same way as a contactor except that they are effectively a soft contactor. To revers the direction of a three phase motor, you must reverse two phases as applied to the motor.

Your post suggests that you have done this, but it didn't work. That is not possible, so you must have got something wrong. - easy to do, especially if you are in a hurry!!

Reverse two phases on the output of the soft starter and you will reverse the direction of the motor. - Note do not reverse the input as well, only reverse either the input or the output exactly as you would a contactor.

Best regards,

Mark.

Hello chaterpilar

VSDs have a parameter to reverse the motor direction, but soft starters are not able to do so. There is no parameter to reverse the motor direction on a soft starter. Some soft starters include a phase sequence protection to ensure that the phase sequence on the input does not get accidently reversed.

Hello anonymous,

I had a situation some months ago whereby a customer reported the very same thing as you in your post of 3/11/05. Reversing 2 phases did not seem to make any difference to motor rotation. In that particular installation we found that one of the SCR's in the soft starter had lost it's gate drive causing the motor to grumble and groan horribly during acceleration.

How does the motor sound in this case?

Regards,

GGOSS

Marke i completely agree with you...about VSD phase reversal options.

But in some softstarters.....eg. ALTISTART 48 of Telemecanique the phase rotation is set to either 123 or 321

in case input leads are changed "Phase reversal" fault comes.

Leads interchanged on output of starter will not have any effect and changing input leads will cause PHR error...hence putting OFF the PHR option in the setup menu of starter and then changing the input leads will change the direction of motor.
