Copper is used on some transmission lines. but Aluminium is cheaper than copper and so is often used in preference to aluminium cables.
Aluminium has a higher resistance than copper, so a larger cross section must be used than with copper. For large overhead lines, the cable has a steel core with aluminium conductors around the outside. This is because the aluminium would not support itself between the spans.
