Hi all, please dont shoot me if I am posting in the wrong place, I have looked but not sure where would suit my question..
I am a carpenter by trade and I have a Ferm Tablesaw(Ferm have now gone bust) the saw has a 1100W induction motor. I have used the saw for around 4 years but it has not had hard use in this time.
I was using it last week and out of the blue it just stopped running with no smells or strange sounds, since then I have not been able to get it running.
I have searched the internet for answers and have purchased another capacitor(second hand) which is of same spec as original.
I installed the replacement capacitor and still the motor will not run. I have now taken the motor apart and looked at it closely and it looks to be in good condition.
I cant see any broken wires(windings) and spindle is straight and bearings are in good health. When I directly put 240 volt to the motor it tries to turn and I can hear the power hum(usual) but even if I twist it it will not spin up.. it sound as if it is trying but not enough power to kick start it...
As you can probably tell I am not at all clued up with these kinds of things and could really do with some advice/help to find the fault and possibly repair the motor if possible.
The Capacitor is 3" high and 1 1/2" across and has 2 wires protruding from the top,
The capacitor specs are:

450Vac 50Hz
EN60252


1. Do you think it may be a bad capacitor?
2. How can I check the capacitor?
3. What is my next move?

Any help would be great fully received...

Welcome to the forum.

Your description sounds like a single phase induction motor with an open circuit in the start circuit.
This can be an open circuit start winding (unusual), open circuit capacitor (quite common), or and open circuit centrifugal start switch (quite common).

I would suggest that an electrician should be able to sort this out pretty quickly by making a few measurements.
He should check the continuity of the start winding, and the switch and that there is sufficient capacitance.

This is an old post and nimbus is probably gone but the below specs are for a run cap, not start !...450V on account of peek voltage running constantly (300 and something from memory) and 20 microfarads is just a little small for a 1kw single phase start cap. there may be another hiding somewhere maybe hanging off one end of the start winding.
