Hello yrk

The cores used in most magnetic components such as transformers and motors are a form of steel lamination. There are different grades of transformer steel with different characteristics.
For high frequency transformers and magnetics, the core is commonly a form of ceramic with iron powder or ferrite materials.

The core provides a low impedance path for the flux and increases the inductance of the winding. This reduces the turns per volt and by concentrating the flux, it reduces the coupling impedance.

Best regards,
Mark.
