Hello chrishinch and welcome to the forum,
If your question relates specifically to reducing in-rush current in 3-phase motor starting applications, then you have come to the right place. Go back to: http://www.lmphotonics.com and click on the links labelled 'Motor Starters' and 'Soft Starters'. The information available there will not only answer your specific questions but also give you a great insight into motor characteristics and motor control. It doesn't get much better than this.
