Dear all,
I have capacitor banks overloaded morethan 130% (as per IEC). What action shall I take?How to rectify?

Hello Riyad

I assume from your post that you are operating the capacitors with the rated voltage and frequency and under those conditions, the current is more than 130% of the rated current.

If this is the case, you have problems with harmonics which will cause the capacitors to fail.

The best solution, is to get rid of the harmonics, but this is not always easy, so the next best solution, is to use detuning reactors.

If you use detuning reactors, you must:
  1. Use capacitors rated for use with detuning reactors. They must be able to sustain a higher voltage continuously. Consult your capacitor supplier.
  2. Use detuning reactors rated in the KVAR of the capacitors on each capacitor or bank. It is important that the KVAR rating of the capacitors and detuning reactor match.
