Capacitor

Hi Gents!

This is with regard to capacitor characteristics.

What would the effects be on the single phase motor if the starting or running capacitor is defective (leaking or shorted). I beleived that if the start cap is open, the motor will be low starting or will not start at all.

Appreciate your views

Regards,

Hi fuente,

I have some single phase ceiling fans in my home. Once, one of the ceiling fans started rotating in reverse direction without any change in connections. I wondered how it possible. When I checked its capacitor, it was found defective. Replacing that capacitor removed the fault.

Usually they don't turn at all as there is no phase shift to start rotation. If the capcitor is not fully open it can ocasionally cause the motor to turn in a random direction, but rarely will it fully accelerate.
