Medium Voltage Soft Starters Market Information

MV soft starter

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am working on the business analysis for medium voltage soft starters industry. Can anyone help me with industry overview, companies, strengths and weakness of the companies, market size (in no. of units & dollar value), overall price information etc? It would be great if I can have a kind of industry report on this product.

I think you will find this information very difficult to ascertain. Most of the suppliers and manufacturers are guarding that information very closely. You can buy a NEMA report that shows the Soft Starter market as a whole, but NEMA does not separate MV from LV soft starters. So by keeping the numbers mixed together, everyone offering them is skewing their market share numbers significantly because of the bigger dollar volume involved in MV starters, which tends to make their financial statements look better. Don't look for any of them to mess up a good thing!

There was an industry report put out in 1997 that you had to pay around $3000 for and I saw it when I was a MV-RVSS product manager for one of the major players. The report was virtually useless because we looked at our own numbers and then we saw that some of the people to whom we brand-labeled our products were reporting similar numbers! From a total market share then, those numbers were essentially doubled, meaning they were useless in terms of determining true end-user demand. After the failure of that report, I seriously doubt anyone else will bother to do it again because I doubt anyone will pay for it again.

If you search through this forum you will find several discussions as to who is in the game, the players haven't changed as far as I know. I would take a scientific-wild-ass-guess that the total world market for MV RVSS starters is around $200 million US, give or take $100 million.

Frost & Sullivan is in the investigative phase of a new market study, analyzing the medium voltage soft starter market from 6.9kV to 13.8kV. It is not clear if this study was commissioned by a manufacturer in the industry in an attempt to justify further investment in the market or if it is a general study being done by F&S. Interesting thing is that only a few manufacturers actually offer this class of medium voltage soft starter so the quality of the final report and the accuracy of their conclusions will be limited by which companies participate in the study and and more importantly, which individuals at these companies provide the requested information.
