Medium Voltage Varaibale Speed Drives

Does any one have experience with 11kV VSD's?

I am trying to accertain the pros & cons of two possible solutions for 900kW, 11kV or 3.3kV Motor & Drive.

As I understand it, 11kV seems to be the new kid on the block and uses either IGBTs in series or new technology single IGCTs. Does any one have experience of either of these two set-ups with reliability, support, costs, etc?

Kind regards

Bamba

Bamba,

please inform us about your country, and location and type of application for this drive.

You could get different info for inverters in Africa for a pump in a stormy area, or for an explosion-proof compressor in Germany.

Personally for that power I would suggest a 3.3 kV motor, max 6.6 kV

Best regards

Mario

Hi Ravi,

Please tell me more regarding your 11kV Medium Voltage unit, power sizes and any reference sites that have these units installed. I would love to see how the output stage is configured (multiple or single). You can forward information to daleb@trind.co.nz.

Kind regards

Dale

At that size you would probably be better off putting in a transformer and using a 6.6 4.16 or 3.3 kv drive. The biggest problem with an MV vfd which has an input over 6.6 kv is that the input switchgear becomes exponentially larger and more expensive. I imagine the motor is also more expensive and provided by a fewer number of vendors.

I am only aware of two companies that provide 11 kv drives. If you would like me to provide information on the two I am aware of I can.

With regards to support and reliability the 11 kv drive is going to be part of the vfd manufacturer's best line, and generally well engineered and carefully supported. However I would guess that with both companies the costs are going to be well above that of a compareable 6.6 kv or less MV drive.

Thanks

Dave
