Hello All,

I need a motor, or other mechanical or hydraulic system, which will offer an adjustable resistance and self-homing function.

Sort of like a tape measure, but with a controllable constant resistance. Is this at all possible with a motor?

You need a variable speed drive set up to provide constant torque. It will provide a constant pulling force on your "tape measure" which will let you pull out the tape if you exceed the torque and it will reel in if you are below the torque. This sort of thing is commonly done in winding machines.
