marke Posted September 10, 2007 Report Share Posted September 10, 2007 Copper is used on some transmission lines. but Aluminium is cheaper than copper and so is often used in preference to aluminium cables. Aluminium has a higher resistance than copper, so a larger cross section must be used than with copper. For large overhead lines, the cable has a steel core with aluminium conductors around the outside. This is because the aluminium would not support itself between the spans.
